Friendship

Sink all the ships
Not the friendship
Relatives by chance
Friends by choice
Gradually with time
Relationship becomes
More and more firm
With mutual understanding
The bond
It bestows...
Unbound happiness
Strength and courage
Sharing and caring
Every euphoric moment
In life!

One rainy day -  Subajana Jeyaseelan

It was a gloomy day
Thundering and lightening
Pouring... And pouring...
Incessantly...
The whole day
People inside -were
Playing games...
Cracking jokes
Watching wrestling...
Movies...
Munching nuts
Children had fun
With laughter
God! soaked in the rain
Played in rivulets
Splashed in muddy waters
Sailed paper –‘boats’-
They...
Turned a deaf ear to their
Mothers’ shouts
And enjoyed the rain
Till dusk...
Night swallowed the day
Dined together
Came time for bed-All
Crept under the blanket

       X……..X

At the Galle Face…

By and large
Saturdays are
Off days for
Young … old
Men… women
Youth … kids
Bid ‘good bye’
To their..
Hustling-bustling
Exhausting, routine life
Free from traffic jams
Deafening horns
Emissions of smoke-All
Need some fresh air
To breathe healthily
To saunter..
On golden cool sand-so
Walk to the beach..
In search of..
Relaxation and peace
Sit on the shore
Chat..Chew nuts
Gaze at the sea with
Silvery waves
Embracing the shore
Without pause
Foam of the waves
White as snow
Kids run and play
Some fly kites
Some sunbathe
Some exercise
Lovers in their own world
Care for nobody
Hide under umbrellas
Caress …Kiss.. Murmur
Ecstatic..
With their youthful emotions..…
Night falls
The moon reminds them
It’s time to leave
Some with pleasure
Some with …reluctant heart
Finally all..
Leave
With content
Anticipating next Saturday…..

On my way!!……  ……..By Subajana Jeyaseelan

It was a beginning of the day
A fresh beautiful morning!
I was in the bus in a pensive mood
Peeping through the window
Enticed with the scenery!
Observing the hustle-bustle
Movements of people on roads
In and out
Suddenly I saw
Along the street seated
In the dusty sand
An old feeble woman
With tanned and wrinkled skin
Because of age and poverty
Begging for coins
Many a passer-by –but
None  paid attention
to the miserable wretched soul!
People rushed in haste
Like swarm of bees!
No time to stop
To drop a coin
In the outstretched arm of
The poor old woman!
Ruminating the scene
Hearts are heavy with the memory of this sorrow
I continued my journey
To my destination!
There is no time for petty
And destructive criticism,
No time for ill will or blaming others.

Child abuse!

Young ‘sprout’
Crushed cruelly
By a ‘brute’
No age difference- many a child
Of various ages
Did not bloom yet –But
Alas!! Squished
Petals are on the ground
Like a withered flower
No maturity
To realize the irreparable loss
What a pity!!
Giving the bribe
The culprit is let out
And ready for ‘hunting’ the other-to
Destroy the dreams
And …
The life of the little bud!
Society sleeps-they
Are the children of abused Mothers?
They are labeled ‘illegal children’
Where will they be?
In the society?
Their future???
Whom to be punished???
God? Fate?
  X----------X

Beautiful night!

Cool breeze!
Shining moon!
Twinkling stars!
Nature is on mirth!
Alas! But- I am on berth

X----------X

Gone are the…days

Gone are the days of happiness
     And …. Beauty!
An awesome summer
And a midnight dream!
It’s stupidity! To open the Past!
    Cheers!  Cheers!
Let life move on

X----------X

Once you
Met me accidentally
The image of mine
Engraved in your memory
Hardly erase me
From the chapters of your life!
You struggle
Battle silently inside
I am not in a position
To accept you!

Being a bilingual-Subajana Jeyaseelan
For a person knowing more than one language is a great strength. In other words, it is an additional weapon. In this modern fast moving technological globe mingling with different community people for various reasons as an academic, professional and so on is inevitable. Attaining the command in English language will take individuals on a ladder of success. When we take our country, there are two major languages, Sinhala and Tamil, which are used by the majority and minority respectively. In addition to their mother tongues if the individuals from both communities know English language it will bring them under one roof. Also, it functions as a bridge for them and will be a gateway to share their emotions, ideas, friendship and reduce the misunderstanding between them. The president of the country says that this sprouting new generation should not learn English as a subject but as a tool of communication. This would, on a long run, lead the nation and its people live in harmony without calamity.

For the last few years Vavuniya campus, has enough students from multi-communities. This resulted in interacting with students from two different communities. Markedly, the medium of instruction for them is in English which support them to develop their language skills in plethora ways. Adding to this point, also in the students’ academic curriculum at the campus they have the courses like Proficiency in English, General English (non-credit subjects) and the Business Communication, a credit subject.  This is a dozen of opportunities to master the language and become bilinguals. The teachers and the parents, which is a bounden duty to them, should think how they can facilitate the students in the learning process.

Further, English language plays the role as link language. This associtaes different countrymen with different languages. This alignment gives a huge opening to dissiminate knowledge and cultivates healthy, amicable friendship. Also it paves way to develop mutual understanding among the diverse countrymen.  Further, many topics can be discussed with them such as their culture, ceremonial rites and rituals, life-style, educational as well as professional systems. Also, observing and learning different attitudes of the people will help shape up our mindset.

Moreover, this is an interesting point related to being a bilingual. A new research suggests that stroke victims who are bilingual far more likely to regain their brain functions rather than who is a monolingual. According to the research findings it suggests that the mental challenge has some connection with the language use; that is speaking more than one language can improve the way the brain deals with strokes, dementia and other damaging influences.
This research was conducted by using 600 stroke patients as a data and scientifically proved by the team - based at the University of Edinburgh and the Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad, India. Adding to it, they notified that bilingual and multilingual nearly 40.5 pct are supposed to regain to their normal mental functions where as monolingual’s proportion was only 19.6 pct the research shows.
.
The team considered the patients' ages as well as other factors such as smoking, diabetes and blood pressure to make sure their results were not attributed to some having a healthier lifestyle.
Holidaying abroad also help people brush up their language skills by blending with people and those who are recovering from a stroke can cover themselves with a stroke travel insurance policy.

According to the researchers the percentage of bilingual patients whose cognitive functions remained undamaged after their stroke was over twice as high as for monolingual ones. The likelihood of post-stroke cognitive impairments, meanwhile, was higher among those who only speak one language.

The study's co-author, Thomas Bak, says people who are bilingual communicate by inhibiting one language while activating another. Switching between languages, keeps the brain in almost constant training, which could be a factor in helping people recover from strokes.

In conclusion, being a bilingual not only fills the communication gap but also it functions as a tonic to maintain physical mental health. Every individual should realize this fact exorbitantly to activate and train the cognitive abilities to acquire one additional language such as English, the global language, in their life.

Poems-Subajana Jeyaseelan

One sky
One sun
One moon
One earth
One ‘I’
It’s me.

Marriage...

Someone said..
Marriage is made in ‘Heaven’
In fact made in a ‘carriage’
Where two bulls are tied -- pull in
Two different directions
Alas! The Carriage got stuck.

Cell Phone

It has become the waking tone
In everyone’s house
Found in
Nook and corner
It has become the fashion
 No cell
No dignity
People search fake respect
Youths are slaves to it
They can survive
Without food..
Without water..Why??
Even without Air
But not without cell!!!
This has become the trouble
To poor parents
Because
Cell has become
The sixth sense
Of many!

Barren land

No one likes
The barren land
Because
No buds no blooms
No green no flourish
People criticize ‘barren land’, say is
Good for nothing!
Barren land knows its own pain
‘Mother of land’ created all lands
The same –Why the bias??
Then …
Why are they called ‘barren?’
What is the sin they committed
They are the creation of God
They also have a little heart
Weeping inside
Nobody knows
Why this partiality?
Whom to be blamed
The reason
Nobody   knows
Why are they called ‘barren’???
Their tears wet the barren
Sorrows become the fertilizer
All are in vain
No crops pop up
In the barren
Is it a curse???
Whose fault is this?

Meeting….

As usual
The station was overwhelmed with
Commuters
Like a ‘swarm of bees’
In the ‘bee hive’
With the intension to
Travel to various destinations
Me one among them
All the eyes were fixed
On the hanging clock
Anticipating the train to come
Within a few minutes
Heard the ‘Screech’
The train
Approached the platform
Passengers were rushed to board
I also pushed myself
Entered inside
Searching for my (lady) seat
To my surprise
One elderly gentleman
Seated next to my seat
Seeing me accommodated
With a beam of
Smile on
His charming dimpled face
His appearance
Gave me the clue
He is from the West
I was a bit hesitant
To break the ice
But..
His kindness and plainness
Encouraged me to converse
Had a lively conversation
Shared our knowledge
He is a package of wisdom
His extraordinary humbleness
Was astonishing
Such a down to earth human being
I have ever met
In a couple of hours
Happy journey was
Ended! Because of
The different destinations
Both of us departed
But..
Fortunately
Our academic path
Made us Continuing the lovely journey
With the ray of hope
Not to end!!!

Fast moving world and mechanical life

Fast moving world and mechanical life
Subajana Jeyaseelan
Life has become insurmountably mechanical, with the busy and heavy schedules of humans. The world has shrunk. Technology being a part of modern life is a controversial one. The speed of communication becomes unbelievable.
By sitting in front of the internet, one can spin the world with in a second; this makes people more engaged and pulled into the busy life. In this new era, overwhelming arrival of mobile phones, iPods, computer and internet and other house-hold electrical goods, do not only give leave to manual power and time but also make men and women lazy and even ill.
Now, the days are difficult since people have become workaholics, money minded and power hungry. Also, gone are the days of giving importance to human values. The tradition of dependency, on each other is being washed away and independency crops up. Even, for transport we rarely depend on each other. As a result, individuals are disregarded or the souls have not been taken care of.
Hence, people do not show any real affection towards each other. They fail to value fellow beings’ feelings, and fall short to cultivate warm and amicable relationship among them, showing no family commitments as they are in a rat race, trying to be in the first rank in this world. Hence, people lead a hustle and bustle lifestyle. When the people are taken away, like the waves to the shore, to modern and busy life, this will gradually disfigure human relationships and family bonds in a long run.
People are not content with what they have; instead they crave for more and more. This is human nature.  A proverb says a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush. I hope, this best suits the situation.
As a result, human beings are pressurized and ultimately thrown into the ocean of depression, tension and stress. This leads man to be mentally physically ill and unfit; also it gives room for developing dangerous ailments as psychosomatic, blood pressure, diabetes and other heart disease. Again this causes restlessness and stress.
In fact, toiling and sweating are, for the betterment of happiness and successful life and not to be in the grip of numerous diseases to ruin their lives. It is really a regrettable and miserable situation for all mankind. Even the erudite people fail to realize the real human values, worthiness of relationships and actual happiness of life. Education is defeated in front of human feelings and emotions. Needless to say, education is meant for tolerance, possessing refined qualities bound with better mutual understanding and not for posing as busy.
The impacts on modern life style mutilate younger generation as well. Most of the youths are blindly, slaved to modern trend. They model cinema heroes and heroines in style and misbehaviors as drinking alcohol and smoking, not obeying or respecting to their elders, misusing internet, hardly show interest in studies and other academic activities. In fact, they build castles in the air. Further, with regards to education, IT has provided the vehicle for the whole destruction.
In addition to this, the arrival of computer and internet which plays a huge role, the reading habit is diminished; the sudden drop can be observed. Youths are not mature enough to feel or realize the repercussions of their conduct. Nevertheless, when they are advised by the teachers and the parents they turn into deaf ears. The negative attitudes of youths are triggered by the environment where they are and the exposure they get. So, Younger generation should be guided in a proper way otherwise their future will be a ship without an anchor.
In conclusion, excess of anything is good for nothing. The people should focus the things in a balanced way in order to get rid of dense schedules and floating in troubles and lose the real mirth and happiness of life. The lost days, opportunities, and life will never return. Once lost it is lost it forever.
